From
Curses to Blessings

The Bible declares this good news: "The Lord your God turned the curse
into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loved you" (Deuteronomy
23:5).
He loved us and continues to love us boundlessly. The consequences of sin are
so terrible, incurring such severe curse, but the love of God is great and His
heart so compassionate.
He came and, with amazing love, was crucified in my and your place, so our sin
could be forgiven and the curses which afflict us be broken.
- The Sin – He carried on the Cross.
Scripture is very clear about this great truth. He became "Sin for
us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him" (2
Corinthians 5:21).
- The Curse – He carried when He hung
on the Cross. Yet again this is another wonderful truth Scripture
emphasazes: "Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having
become a curse for us" (Galatians
3:13).
Just think – the Lord became "sin" and "curse"
for us! You can now say, "the Lord loved me. He became sin for me.
The Lord loved me. He became a curse for me. The Lord loved me. He came
to forgive all my sins and to break the curse for me".
Consider what a tragedy it is! The Lord died for all people. He persistently
calls them to Himself, to forgive their sins, to break their curses and lead
them to a life of blessing. Yet inspite of this, they still reject Him and
don’t come.
This is the shame, that the Lord died for you and you didn’t
wholeheartedly come to Him and give your life to Him.
Believe me, life without God in the centre, life full of sin, will not only
lead you to the lake of fire in the end, but will cause you "tribulation
and anguish" (Romans 2:9) in this
life.
The life of sin brings about curses; curses which not only afflict the soul
[i.e. lack of security, peace and joy], but also which affect both the body and
possessions.
It is not true that material / physical curses terminated completely with the
Redemption of Christ. Curses do still exist, but now it is possible for anyone
to protect himself from them.
Jesus came to earth and died for all, making it possible for everyone to be
redeemed and saved. However, we can only receive salvation through His
forgiveness of our sins, if we come and give our lives to the Lord.
In the same way, Jesus also became "curse for us" (Galatians
3:13), while He was on the Cross. He became a curse to redeem us
from curses influencing our souls and bodies. Just as we can only receive
salvation by coming to Him and accepting it, so we can only receive protection
from curse by believing that He became curse for us, to redeem us from it.
Curses will continue to exist as long as we do not stand firmly against them,
do not believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths that Christ has
redeemed us from them.
Curses are not broken automatically but by an act of faith.
These are references that confirm the existence of curses in the New
Testament. Please turn to 2 Peter 2:14; Revelation
22:3 and 18:4,8; Luke 19:43, 44 and 13:1-5.
I can assure you that surrender to sin and a life apart from the Lord may
bring physical as well as spiritual and psychological curses. Paul told the
Corinthian believers that the reason behind the curses afflicting their bodies
was their recklessness. He wrote, saying: "Manay are weak and sick among
you, and many sleep [die]. For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be
judged" (1 Corinthians 11:30,31). Refer also to
John 5:14.
Curses may still have a hold over those Christains who don not resist the
attacks of the enemy and stand firm in their conviction that Christ has redeemed
them from curses. Scripture warns us to this effect: "[ not] give place to
the devil" (Ephesians 4:27).
"Resist the devil and he will flee from you" (James
4:7). Resist the enemy. Declare that you are not under the curse.
Material
/ Physical Blessings
Just as material / physical curses are not restricted to the
Old Testament, neither are material / physical blessings. In the same way that
surrender to sin brings material / physical curses that may harm the body;
likewise life with the Lord Jesus leads to material as well as spiritual
blessings.
- It is so obvious from Scripture that
the Lord Jesus cares about healing the body. All the healings He
performed were not only to prove His Lordship, but He healed out of His
compassion for the sick: "And then Jesus, moved with compassion,
stretched out His hand and touched him" (Mark
1:41).
- Also, "He was moved with compassion
for them, and healed their sick" (Matthew
14:14). and , "He gave them [His disciples] power.. to
heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease" (Matthew
10:1).
- James speaks of the prayer of faith that heals
the sick (James 5:15). Thus,
physical healing of the body is a blessing from the Lord.
- In the Sermon on the Mount, we are left in no
doubt that material blessings continue for the New Testament believers,
for the Lord says: "Therefore, do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we
eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For
after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows
that you need of all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and
His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you"
(Matthew 6:31-33).
- In his second letter to the Corinthians, Paul
says: "He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.. for God
loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward
you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things"
(2 Corinthians 9:6-8).
- In his letter to the Philippians, he says:
"And my God shall supply all your needs according to His
riches in glory" (Philippians 4:19).
- John, in his letter to Gaius, speaks of
material blessings as well: "I pray that you may prosper in
all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers"
(3 John 2).
If you live with the Lord, you will enjoy abundant blessings, both spiritual
and material / physical. But if you turn your back on Him and
surrender to the enemy, both spiritual and material / physical curses will
afflict you.
The
Curse of the Law
Paul gave this curse such a name,
because it affects anyone who breaks God’s commandments (the Law).
Of those who never had the opportunity to hear
the Word of God, Paul says: "Those, although not having the [written] Law,
are a law to themselves [because they have a conscience]" (Romans
2:14).
Deuteronomy chapter 28 lists the different
curses which affect Law-breakers who do not seek the Lord’s forgiveness and
protection.
1-
Curses Afflicting the Soul
- "The
Lord will strike you with confusion of heart [anxiety]" (Deuteronomy
28:28).
- "The
Lord will give you a trembling heart [enslaved to fear].. and anguish
of soul [depression].. and have no assurance of life [anxiety]" (Deuteronomy
28:65, 66).
- "The
Lord will send on you cursing, confusion, and rebuke in all that
you set your hand to do [you will be weary in everything you do]" (Deuteronomy
28:20).
2-
Curses Breaking Family Bonds
- "You
shall beget sons and daughters but they shall not be yours" (Deuteronomy
28:41).
This curse deprives a man from
enjoying his relationship with his children.
- "The
sensitive and very refined man among you [the rich] will be hostile toward
his brother and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the rest of his
children" (Deuteronomy
28:54).
- "The
ender and delicate woman [the rich rich] among you.. will refuse
toward the husband of her bosom and to her son and to her daughter" (Deuteronomy
28:56).
This curse of selfishness makes
someone insensitive to the needs of those closest to him.
3-
Curses Influencing Work and Financial Status
- "You
shall not prosper in your ways; you shall be only oppressed and
plundered continually" (Deuteronomy
28:29).
- "You
shall carry much seed out to the field but gather little in, for the
locust shall consume it. You shall plant vineyards… but you shall [not]..
gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them" (Deuteronomy
28:38,39).
This curse causes effort
and time to be wasted; much labour and little harvest.
- "The
alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall
come down lower and lower. He shall lend to you but you shall not
lend to him; he shall be be the head and you shall be the tail" (Deuteronomy
28:43,44).
This curse incurs social
instability.
4-
Curses Afflicting the Body [Health]
- "The
Lord will strike you with consumption, with fever, with inflammation, with
severe burning fever, with sword, with scorching, and with mildew" (Deuteronomy
28:22).
- "The
Lord will strike you with the boils of Egypt, with tumours, with scab and
with the itch, from which you cannot be healed" (Deuteronomy
28:27).
- "The
Lord will strike you in the knees and on the legs with severe boils which
cannot be healed" (Deuteronomy
28:35).
- "Also
every sickness and every plague which is not written in this Book of
the Law" (Deuteronomy
28:61).
Curses
Are Inheritable
In the same chapter listing the
curses (Deuteronomy
28), it is clearly written:
"Then the Lord will bring upon you and your descendants extraordinary
plagues – great and prolonged plagues – and serious and prolonged
sicknesses"
(Deuteronomy 28:59).
Scripture repeatedly makes this
point absolutely clear. For example:
- "And
after all this, if you do not obey me… those of you who are left shall
waste away in their iniquity… also in their fathers’ iniquities,
which are with them, they shall waste away. But if they confess their
iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers… then I will remember My
covenant with Jacob" (Deuteronomy
26:39).
- The
Word of Lord to Eli the priest: "And all the descendants of your
house shall die in the flower of their age [the curse of premature
death]" (1
Samuel 2:33).
- In Lamentations, it is
written:“ Our fathers sinned .. but we bear their iniquities “
(Lamentations 5: 7)[ Please also refer to : Leviticus 26: 39, 40; 2 Samuel
21: 1-2; 2 Kings 22: 13; 2 Chronicles 34: 23; Psalms 79: 8; Jeremiah 32:
18; Nehemiah 9: 1, 2; and from the New Testament, Matthew 23: 35 and 27:
25; Revelation 2: 21-23].
In fact, some curses really do affect several generations of a
family. Take, for example, families who do not genuinely know the Lord Jesus,
whose ancestors have been involved in witchcraft or fortune-telling, you will
find that what the Bible says about curse is true in their lives.
However, this does not mean that everyone will be affected by
sins from past generations. Beloved, I want you to know that the Lord carried
the curses while crucified on the Cross. Come and take refuge in His
atonement. Believe and confess that you are redeemed from the curse, and
no curse will be able to affect you. Curses are not inheritable, if you take
refuge in the Lord. [Please read Ezekiel 18].
Consider this woman – her name is Rahab,
a Canaanite from a cursed people. “Cursed be Canaan; a servant of
servants he shall be to his brethren” (Genesis 9: 25). This people excelled in
sinfulness. Their constant refusal to repent inevitably brought down upon them
the destructive judgment of God.
Rahab belonged tot his cursed nation. Furthermore, she was one
of the most sinful women in the city. She was known as Rahab the Harlot.
How could she, a Canaanite, escape the judgment of God over her people? How
could she become blessed instead of cursed? Scripture records her story to
encourage you. Whatever your sins and their ensuing curses, whatever curses you
have inherited, they can all be converted into blessings. Follow
Rahab’s example:
She Listened to the News of God
God had commissioned Joshua to attack the people of Canaan and
destroy them. Joshua obeyed the command and sent two spies ahead.
Rahab met these two men and talked to them. She said: “ For
we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you,
when you came out of Egypt .. for the Lord your God, He is God” (Joshua 2:
10, 11).
Rahab started on the road to salvation when she heard
about the wonderful deeds of God. She not only heard but pondered on what she
had heard.
The first step is to listen; to open your ears to the
wonderful news about God. Have you heard this news? Do you know that this news
assures you of God’s love for you and His desire to save you from curses and
to fill your life with peace and joy.
You must begin by hearing this good news, especially
the part that says the Lord carried all the curses on your behalf when He
hung on the Cross.
Paul says that faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17). Rahab
heard the news, so faith entered her heart. She believed that the God who had
delivered His people from Pharaoh, would rescue her as well.
She Trusted that God Loved Her
When Rahab met the two spies, she did not see them as enemies,
but as messengers from God, sent especially to rescue her. In spite of her
sinful past, and her cursed nationality, she believed that God loved her and
sent the men to deliver her. The Bible says: “ Rahab .. received the
messengers” (James 2: 25).
Beloved, do you want the curses over you to be changed into
blessings? Trust that God loves you personally. Have faith that
what you have heard about His abundant grace applies to you. God sent these
words to you. He wants to give you rest, deliverance and healing. This is a
tremendous revelation – Christ has redeemed you from curse so that it may not
affect you.
She
Shut the Door
The two men told Rahab that
her city was going to be destroyed, and that if she was to be saved, she and
her family would have to shut the door (Joshua
2:19). "Shutting
the door" is a very important step. You have to shut the door on
all the things that can incur curse.
Beloved, have you ever meddled
in witchcraft or fortune-telling? Shut the door and cut off
this connection right away. Do you have any amulets or charms in your home?
Burn them and get rid of them immediately. It is very danagerous to keep them!
If the difficult circumstances
you are in now are due to your past life, shut the door now.
Shut it on the life that takes away your peace.
Resolve not to turn back to
the world. Stand against sin with all your determination and the grace of God
will strengthen you. Say: "I will shut the door". If you realize
that your current situation is because you have continued in the sin of your
fathers and grandfathers, then take heart and shut the door
to this sin.
Like the Psalmist, Asaph, pray
to God: "Oh, do not remember former iniquities against us! Let your
tender mercies come speedily to meet us" (Psalm
79:8).
Trust that Christ has already redeemed
you from the curses inherited from your fathers and
forefathers. Praise God that He turns curses into blessings.
She
Opened the Window
Her house was in the wall of the
city, so she opened the window and tied a rope of scarlet thread to
it, just as she had been directed by the two men.
She shut the door on the past
and opened the window to heaven, to speak to the true God. He
would see the scarlet rope. Scarlet is the colour of blood,
which it symbolises – the precious blood of Jesus.
You can open the window too, and
look heavenwards. Look to the blood of the Lord Jesus, which
speaks in heaven on your behalf (Hebrews
12:24). This blood declares
that the Lord loved you and became a curse on the Cross to redeem you.
Close the door
on your former life of sin and recklessness which brings curses into life. Open
the window so the light of the Lord can shine in. Th eHoly Spirit is
calling you: "Awake… awake… shake yourself from the dust.. Loose
yourself from the bonds of your neck, O captive" (Isaiah
52:1,2) and "Arise..
shine.. for your light has come! And the glory of the Lord is risen upon
you" (Isaiah
60:1).
Open the window
to the Lord’s light and love. Open your heart to Him. Invite Him to come and
reign over your entire life. Open your ears to His encouraging
words. Do not be afraid of following Him. He knows that you are still weak. He
will be your shepherd. He will carry you on His shoulders.
He bought you with His precious
blood. He will protect you and do wonders for you. Rahab was transformed
from a cursed sinful woman, into one of the wonderful witnesses of faith.
She became a mother among the people of God – an ancestor of Christ Himself.
Her curses were
turned into blessings. Follow her example and
you will go from blessing to blessing.
Listen
to the good news – Christ has redeemed you from the curse. He has
turned curse into blessing for you, because He loved you.
Trust
in His love. Believe that He wants to set you free and give you a
better life to enjoy.
Shut
the door on everything that incurs curse.
Open
the window to the Lord’s light. Look to the blood of the Covenant
which brings forgiveness.
Declare that you are "in
Christ" and that you are "in Christ.. a new creation" (2
Corinthians 5:17). Resist the
devil when he tries to bring about curses over your life.. Declare to him that
you are not under the curse but the blessing. rebuke him in the Name of Jesus.
Believe that life in Christ is
full of blessings, brought by the Holy Spirit to your spirit, soul, and body.
They are blessings which lead to blessings and take you from glory to glory.
